How do dentists get more patients from Google?

Dentists get more patients from Google by winning two places: the Map Pack — the three pins that appear for “dentist near me” — and the organic results for the procedures they actually want more of. Most new-patient calls start with a Google search, and most of those searches end in one of those two places. Here are the seven plays that get you there, in the order they pay off.

1. Complete your Google Business Profile — actually complete it

The Map Pack is a Google Business Profile contest, and Google says plainly that ranking there comes down to relevance, distance, and prominence — with complete profiles favored. Every category filled (implants, cosmetic, emergency — not just “Dentist”), real operatory photos, current hours, services listed, questions answered. It's free, it moves faster than anything else on this list, and half your competitors have never opened theirs. The full checklist is in our Google Business Profile guide for dentists.

2. A fast website on a CMS you own

Your site is the landing strip for every play below, and Google reads its speed and structure as ranking signals. That means a real CMS — WordPress, Wix, Shopify, or Webflow — not a locked page-builder a vendor controls, and pages that load before a parent on a school-run phone gives up. If your site can't be edited without emailing someone, fix that before spending a dollar on anything else here.

3. Service pages for the cases you want more of

One “Our Services” page ranks for nothing. A dedicated page each for implants, Invisalign, crowns, and emergency visits can rank for each — and those searches carry intent worth caring about: an implant case is $3,000–$5,000, an aligner start $5,000+. This is also how you steer case mix: publish depth on the procedures with the best production per chair, not the ones PPO write-offs have hollowed out. Emergency pages deserve special attention — “emergency dentist [city]” searchers book the first practice that answers.

4. City and neighborhood pages

Google matches searchers to practices by location, so a page for each town and neighborhood you draw from — with real local detail, not the same paragraph with the city name swapped — widens the net beyond your street address. This is the core of local SEO for dentists, and it's where a practice on the edge of a metro quietly steals patients from the practices downtown.

5. Answer-first content that AI assistants can cite

A growing share of “does a root canal hurt” and “how much do implants cost” questions now get answered by Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity — and those systems cite pages that answer the question in the first paragraph, then explain. Practices publishing that kind of content get named; practices without it don't exist in the answer. How to structure for it is covered in AI SEO for dentists. This is the volume play — it takes dozens of articles, which is exactly the part worth automating.

6. Reviews you earn chairside

Review count and rating feed the “prominence” part of the Map Pack formula, and patients read them before they call. Honest note: no software earns reviews for you — ours included. This is a front-desk play. The practices that win it do one simple thing consistently: when a patient is happy at checkout, the front desk asks, and a text with the direct review link goes out before the patient reaches the parking lot. Ask every happy patient, respond to every review, and never buy them.

7. Consistent name, address, and phone everywhere

Google cross-checks your practice details across directories — ADA listings, insurance directories, Yelp, Healthgrades, the local chamber. If you're “Summit Smiles Dentistry” on one and “Summit Smiles Dentistry of Denver, LLC” with an old suite number on another, that inconsistency quietly erodes trust in your listing. Pick one exact format and make every citation match. Tedious, one-time, worth it.

How fast any of this works

Honestly: profile fixes can move the Map Pack in weeks; content and rankings build over 30–90 days and compound from there. Anyone promising page one in a week is selling something else. What dental SEO results look likeshows the month-by-month arc. Plays 1, 6, and 7 are yours — an afternoon and a front-desk habit. Plays 2 through 5 are publishing work, measured in dozens of pages, and that's the part your website should be doing automatically. See what that looks like for your practice with a free SEO plan — it takes about a minute.
